Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter - Dance

When the first quarter 2013 was originally closed out in December of 2012 (due to an abundance of Christmas Releases), there were only two entries in Dance. Dance. Not only were there two entries, but they both happened to garner perfect 5 ratings. First up was Shiny Toy Guns with III. Thousand Foot Krutch also made a showing with Metomorphosiz: The End Remixes, a remix album for their recent release, The End is Where We Begin.

The lost entries exploded this genre, with now five entries for this quarter. Since the genre got split in two, that's not so bad, but this is one of the danger genres this year.

Dance/Synthpop

Electronic/Industrial

Beginning with the 3rd Platinum Vinyl Awards, the Dance/Synthpop genre was split into the two sub-genres. While Beckah Shae normally would be in the first category, her recent work has been more trance than dance, which puts her into the second.

Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter - Rap

Int the original post for Hip Hop and Rap there were three entries which passed muster to be eligible for the 4th Platinum Vinyl Awards. There are always more releases than are eligible, of course, but, when additional entries are discovered, things get a little complicated. In this case the entry list suddenly doubled, and two Perfect 5's joined the ranks. There isn't much cause for concern here, not yet. Not like, say, Alternative. Check out Confessions of the Candyman for more information. I still don't know what to do if the 5's fill the ranks of a genre. Expand or Shrink to fit. I guess whatever will cause the least griping.

Hip Hop & Rap

• Coffee Jones of Grits - Fresh Brew
• Japhia Life - Westside Pharmacy
• Je'kob - Hope
• Thi'sl - Free From The Trap

Brinson and Thi'sl made a perfect rating. They were pretty impressive. A few other notes on this redesigned quarter. Adult Contemporary, Pop and Metal were combined into one post and Gospel and Folk Music another. Alternative, Modern Worship and Rock will have their original posts readjusted. Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter - Gospel Folk

The lost categories. Back in December of 2012, when these posts were originally posted, there were no entries for Children's Music, Folk Music, and Gospel. Then came the lost entry debacle. A whole closet's worth of entries were found and everything had to be re-tabulated.

At the end of the 1rst Quarter, before the closet of entries were discovered, there were no entries in Children's Music, Folk/Folk Rock, and Gospel. Now that the re-tabulation is complete, there are still no entries for Children's Music. This post will cover the four releases for folk and gospel.

Folk/Folk Rock

• Warren Barfield - Redbird
• Shelly Moore - Unravelling
• Charlie Peacock - No Mans Land

The biggest WOW came from Shelly Moore. This was perfect folk music. Charlie Peacock is a classic. You really have to hear his music.

Gospel/R&B

• Freddy Washington - The Jesus Record

This has got to be one of the longest layovers between a single (Jesus) and the album it will appear on. Still It was worth the wait.

We conclude our announcement of the First Quarter 2013 Platinum Vinyl Award releases. The Concluding Category is rock, and there were nine releases this quarter. Expected names and a few newcomers. The final list.

Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter - Alternative

The Alternative Rock Category is always one of the biggest in the Platinum Vinyl Awards. Alternative and Rock almost could be one category, but thank God we usually separate them, because it would make narrowing down the field without a major fued impossible.

There were ten entrants into the Alternative Pool this First Quarter of 2013. Because of that we go to our familiar list format, and will not go into detail on each one.

Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter

Things never really end here at Night Beat HQ.  Once one quarter ends another begins, and often there is no rest. Being a shoestring operation, we only rest when the industry rests, and sometimes we need that time to catch up. This was one of those breaks.

The First Quarter of every Platinum Vinyl Award eligibility year is usually pretty quiet, seeing that the industry is awash in Christmas releases. This year is no exception. One category (Children's Music) has no entries, and four others (Gospel, Folk, Pop, and Hard Rock) have less than three entries each, some only one. We should be through this fairly quickly.

I try to start off each quarter combining the less represented genres into a single post, leaving the major categories to have their own moment in the sun.

We begin with Pop Music, which two entrants this quarter. Still, it was a fairly big entrant. Newsboys made a splash this fall with Live In Concert: God's Not Dead. While I wasn't impressed with the studio album, they more than made up for it with the live album. Kind of Like Gungor did this quarter. A former newsboy, Paul Colman, had a release this quarter as well, with From the Saltland to the River.

Also a bit surprising was to have only two entrants in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. A newcomer, at least to The Night Beat, made the cut Texas In July took the honors with their self titled release. Among the newly discovered entries was Set For Tomorrow and Prophet Arise.

Adult Contemporary had four entries, and is our biggie for this post. Brandon Heath is an industry favorite, though I have not been impressed with all of his work (Leaving Eden did not impress me). Blue Mountain did, however. The somewhat lesser known Bebo Norman also made a showing with Lights of Distant Cities. Another old favorite, Clay Crosse made his reDedication this quarter, and Tyrus Morgan proved he can walk a Straight Line.

Music Video Monday: Don't Have Love

Welcome to the latest edition of Music Video Monday, where we say share the greatest music videos in Christian Music. Today we begin the first quarter of the 2013 Eligibility Year.

We will begin with a video which I will probably replay during the Christmas Season in my Christmas Video post. This is an animated video by Alt-Metal band August Burns Red. Christmas Snow and a Christmas Sled. This is Flurries.

Holly Starr released a new album entitled Focus on October 2. In anticipation of the release Starr released a music video for the single Don't Have Love.

The Glorious Unseen continues with the Love theme with Harp in My Heart from their October 9 release, Lovesick.

And we conclude this Music Video Monday with Shiny Toy Guns and Fading Listening. This is a precious video featuring some great kids.

Music Video Monday: Sooner Than Later

Welcome back to the latest edition of Music Video Monday. It's October 1, 2012, and that means that we have begun the First Quarter of the 2013 (or 4th) Platinum Vinyl Awards. At least I can say that as the First Quarter of 2013 begins I am on the 4th Quarter of 2012.

We begin with a band which will be nominated in several categories, not the least of which will be comeback of the year. If you consider The Dawn of Grace (2008), which was a Christmas Release, it's been four years. For the non seasonal studio release Divine Discontent (2002), you saw that right, it has been TEN YEARS. Either way comeback is appropriate. This is Sooner Than Later from the just released Lost in Transition by Alternative legends Sixpence None The Richer.

This next one is a two-fer. Both Group 1 Crew and Chris August recently released new studio albums. Deciding to be extremely nice to us here at The Night Beat, Group 1 Crew released this video He Said (Feat. Chris August) from Fearless.

An Epic No Less is a promising new band, and this is Mercy Light from Echo of Love.

Finally we conclude this edition of Music Video Monday with the sophomore release of The Museum, which was entitled My Only Rescue. This is Love Will Find You off of that album.
