Cooking Something Up: The Class of 1996

The Class of 1996. Or the Class of 2021. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction rules, which I am borrowing, is 25 years from the date of the first album. This year is 25 years from a release in 1996. And what a year it is.

The list is by no means inclusive, but I think the following would be first ballot Hall of Fame.

First, the also rans. These may eventually get in, but not first ballot. Blackball, Ghoti Hook, and My Friend Stephanie. Rock, Alternative and Ska.

The Class of 2021 is 6 Strong. We Start with a little house cleaning, and when you do, it's best to use Bleach. A punk alternative band that made it's bones by appearing on the Jenny Jones Show and performing Super Good Feeling. The Post Punk scene wasn't very big, but Bleach fans were loyal. They burned out quickly as their final concert was in 2004. I saw them 3 times in 1997 with Seven Day Jesus, in 1999 with Joy Electric and Miss Angie, and as part of Soulfest in 2004. The Cause of Death was a tired heart caused by the death of friends in the Gulf War. We have been waiting for a reunion since.

Seven Day Jesus came on to the scene at the same time, and actually toured together for a time. They were more straight up rock than Bleach an so got overwhelmed in the crowd. A. Point of trivia is that Bass player Russ Fox also played with Bleach

The Ska Scene blew up in 1996. When a genre takes off it seems like the band flow to it like mice to the Pied Piper. The most successful of them was the Orange County Supertones.

Punk had the Ramones, and the Christian World's Ramones were called The Huntington's. If you like your songs under 2 minutes, this is the band for you.

Starting from Hard Rock and mellowing to Emo, Stavesacre. Their latest release was in 2017 after they had taken a 7 year hiatus.

And finally, the most successful of them all, Skillet. I still consider their debut almost unlistenable, though not as bad as ZoeGirl. The sole constant in a quarter century, Bass Guitar/Lead Singer John Cooper. His wife Korey joined in 2000 as keyboardist/guitar

R/programming/only adult in The room and the Band has been invincible ever since. Based on recent events, I expect they will be around for a long time to come.

There you have it, the Class of 2021. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Music Video Monday: Legendary

Welcome back to an all new edition of Music Video Monday. Looks like we are going for three weeks in a row. That's got to be some kind of record these days, and that is not a pun.

We begin our musical tour with We Are Messengers. I go hot and cold with this band (Case in Point Maybe its okay. It really seems to make excuses for things that are wrong with your life. Just my opinion). I am going hot with their latest single. This is the lyric video for Power.

Next up, it's time to wake up Oh, Sleeper. They just released a new album entitled Bloodied/Unbowed, which received a perfect 5 Emerald rating. This is the music video for fissure.

Finally we move on to Skillet. They will be releasing Victorious on AUGUST 2, that's only 11 days away. From the songs released so far this is going to be an awesome album. This is the music video for Legendary.

That does it for this edition of Music Video Monday. We return to our 3rd Quarter rollout tomorrow. Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Lost Love Songs: A Coupleary Celebration

Well it is that time of year again. Coupleary. It is the 13th Month of The Year and spans from (Officially) January 15-February 14, but unofficially it lasts from December 26 (I checked, the stores had everything out on the shelves) until February 17. As a single guy, I usually do my best to ignore all the mushy ads. Valentines Day is one of the "holidays" that I opt-out of. I figure I save at least $500 every year.

One of those things I try to avoid is love songs, at least the typical "I'd never trade a thing, you are so wonderful to me" songs. Written by someone who has the girl. Those of us who look at the situation and decide to try our luck at Foxwoods tend to like the other kind of "love song". The song where the girl says no or otherwise leaves. I call this playlist lost love songs, after "tis better to have loved and lost..." It is a work in progress and I will keep adding to it as I find them. For now, this is the list.

• Emery, The Ponytail Parades: "It scares me to think that you could find takers other than me, better than me." "Don't say that we can still be friends." With two cuts here, they are the king of the break up song.
• Emery, Can't Stop The Killer: One of the most disturbing songs in Christian Music. The chronicle of a Broken Marriage ending in Murder. You have to hear it to believe it.
• Color Theory, I Should Have Kissed You: "I told myself when you leaned in closer, this is my big chance but now it is over, and now I miss you. I should have kissed you." Honesty like this gets you the co-regency.
• Color Theory, A Safe Distance: "I will always love you, From a safe distance" Enough Said.
• Skillet, Say Goodbye: "Don't say anything tonight, if you're gonna say goodbye"
• NF, I Just Wanna Know: "I just wanna know, when did you get so cold, what happened to your soul."
• Sumerlin, Breaking Out: "It's my fault I gave my heart away with the key, I thought that she would be the one to stay here."
• The Ember Days, Darling: On first spin I felt it was about a spouse dying, I later discovered that it was about the death of a child. It works either way. "What shall be my hope without without my love without my love. Will I find heaven to be my only relief." I can not hear this song without tearing up. A short vocal song with a long instrumental end.
• The Quiet Science, The Things That Cannot Be: "If Only Every Word You Said Could be Removed From Me so that I didn't know you at all. If Only Every Line of your face didn't burn so deep into my memory the things that cannot be."

Despite the list I am not depressed, only realistic. The sayings end "than not to have loved at all" is true. You can't break up if you weren't together at one point. Get your tissues and give it a listen. Meanwhile I'll be practicing my poker skills. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

MVM Special Edition: #PlatVnyl7 Rock Video of The Year Nominees

We have reached the end of this portion of the Video of The Year Nominees. There is still the General Field portion of the awards to go, but that is yet to be narrowed down. Most likely we shall go to the other portions for a while. Those were completed first. Anyway, the nominees for Rock Video of The Year are: Back From The Dead by Skillet; Black Honey by Thrice; Rot by Lacey Sturm; Shake The Skies by FearlessBND; and Still Breathing by Veridia. Our last convenient playlist (for a while)
That does it. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Music Video Monday: Rot

Welcome back to Music Video Monday, where we play the best music videos in Christian Music. We are ready to rock. We begin with Paper Route, which is builing on The Peace of Wild Things and continuing their dominance of the Alternative genre. Here they tell you to live live and Laugh About It.

Next up we have Skillet, a favorite of The Night Beat from the early years. While I still can't get over Korey as a short haired blonde, that is nothing compared to John with a thick beard and mustache. At least we have Korey back on synths doing what makes Skillet sound best, and doing  Worship.  This is Stars.

And finally, we finally have a Music Video from Lacey Sturm's solo project Life Screams. Like I said when the album originally came out, we may miss her in Flyleaf, but this helps a whole lot. This is Rot.

That does it for this edition of Music Video Monday. Until next week, when we will have more Music Videos for you, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Night Beat Rewind: July 2016

Welcome to the July Edition of Rewind. The Fourth Quarter is one third over. Only two months remain and the #PlatVnyl7 eligibility year will be in the bag. Things are really starting to heat up here. As we expect, the big guns have held their releases until this time. Without further ado, July Rewind. We begin with the songs released during the month.

The Singles Scene

• As We Ascend - Wash Away 4.75 Emeralds
• Canon - Eagles 4.25 Emeralds
• Capital Kings - I Can't Quit 4.50 Emeralds
• Forevermore - Noumina 4.50 Emeralds
• Lakewood Music - Live In the Wonderful 4.50 Emeralds
• Skillet - Back From The Dead 4.75 Emeralds

A very good mix, with Skillet the cream of the crop. Don't know what to expect from Canon this time around. On to the albums. We begin with those that will not make the pool.

Missing The Mark

• Hollis Creek Revival - In The River 3.75 Emeralds
• J-Giles Son - Hands on The Clock 3.50 Emeralds
• JSon - Foreign, Volume 1 3.75 Emeralds

• Weston Skaggs - Joy and Sorrow Meet 3.50 Emeralds
• Toarn - Giant Killer 3.75 Emeralds
• Vineyard Music - God You Are: Live From Southern California 3.75 Emeralds

Perhaps a Skaggs (related to Ricky?) should have tipped me off, but NRT called it Praise and Worship instead of Country and Western. Only disappointment was JSon. I expected a lot more. This next group did not disappoint.

A few comments for the month. Julianna Zobrist is on her third album, yet to The Night Beat she is a new artist and one to watch for. It is good to see Relient K back in the saddle. It is only three years, but it seems longer. They have a slightly different sound than I expected, though not as different as the now Pop Group 1 Crew. Almost Ironic to have the album called Power. It could have used a bit more. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.
