The 2016 2nd Quarter- Alternative

We are back to the "real" genres. Alternative Rock served up a half dozen nominees, which would almost fill a final if they were all taken. What it does mean is there will be a good deal of judging to fill the final 7 in this category. Let's get to it.

Alternative

All I have to say here is that Anchor and Braille has stepped in to fill the void left by the departure of Anberlin from the scene. They were rewarded with a Perfect Album. This is going to be a good year.

One final note. While going about the making of this post we found out about the untimely death of Prince Rogers Nelson (aka Prince) at the very young age of 57. Since it is my birthday tomorrow and I will be 50, I say very young. The Music World, including the Night Beat, has lost a legend too soon. I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Night Beat Rewind: November 2015

We are just about done with 2015 folks. December looks to be a bit sparse, so we may get that rewind done before January. That's wishful thinking and we still have to get through November. Here We Go.

As it is the season, we begin with our:

Christmas Music (Non-Eligible)

  • Copperlily - A Very Copperlily Christmas 5 Emeralds
  • TaRanda Green - Spirit of Christmas 4.75 Emeralds
  • John and Valerie Guerra - It's Almost Christmas 4.25 Emeralds
  • Gungor - O Christmas 4.75 Emeralds
  • Vernon Hill - Great Joy 4.75 Emeralds
  • Jaime Jamgochian and Tyrus Morgan - Christmastime 4.25 Emeralds
  • Brothers McClurg - Goin Back To Bethlehem 3.75 Emeralds
  • Justin McRoberts - Christmas Songs, Volume 3 4.25 Emeralds
  • Various - Christmas Goes Gospel, Volume 2 4.75 Emeralds
  • Various - Dream Christmas, Volume 3 4.50 Emeralds
  • Various - Vital Christmas: Dance of Joy 4.50 Emeralds

The Singles Scene

  • Color Theory - OBE 4.75 Emeralds
  • Fearless BND - We Lift You Higher 4.50 Emeralds
Now we move on to the non-seasonal album listings. I have decided to be scrooge this year, and I am branding a fairly good amount as

Missing The Mark

  • Bridge Worship Band - My Great Need 3.75 Emeralds
  • Michael Bahn - Before Our King 3.75 Emeralds
  • J Monty - Second Born 3.75 Emeralds
  • NomiS - Socially Just 3.75 Emeralds
  • TJ Pompeo - Pompeiion 3.50 Emeralds
  • Promise - Falling Rain 3.75 Emeralds
  • Talkie - Hablas 3.50 Emeralds
  • Yaves - Prince Among Thieves 3 3.50 Emeralds
Most of the releases just missed, but a few either didn't impress at all or irritated me quite a bit. Such was the case with TJ Pompeo. One of the White Hip Hop contingent (or should I say Plain White Rapper), he seems to be buying into the Police Officers Are Hunting African Americans to Beat Up and Kill because it amuses them line that the liberals are slandering people with these days.  Fortunately that is only one song, but the rest of the album is only so-so. Yaves and Talkie were "meh", I believe the phrase is.

Our next group needs no excuses. It is simply

Pure Platinum Perfection

  • Falling Up - Falling Up 5 Emeralds
  • Kirk Franklin - Losing My Religion 5 Emeralds
  • Sara Groves - Floodplain 5 Emeralds
Most of the releases fall between the two, they are:

Semi Precious Metal

  • Alache - The Chronicles of The Mrs. 4.75 Emeralds
  • Audile - Am I 4.75 Emeralds
  • Benjah - Motives 4.50 Emeralds
  • Casting Crowns - A Live Worship Experience 4.50 Emeralds
  • Consumed By Fire - Lean on Me 4.50 Emeralds
  • The Exchange - Compass 4.50 Emeralds
  • Family Force Five - Time Still Stands 4.75 Emeralds
  • Adam Layne Fisher - Live at Barnet Park 4.75 Emeralds
  • Five Iron Frenzy - Between Pavement and Stars EP  4.50 Emeralds
  • Gloriam Dei - The Covenant 4.75 Emeralds
  • Natalie Grant - Be One 4.75 Emeralds
  • GuvnaB - Secret World 4.50 Emeralds
  • Deitrick Haddon - Masterpiece 4.75 Emeralds
  • Kutless - Surrender 4.75 Emeralds
  • Phillip LaRue - You 4.75 Emeralds
  • MH Eternal - Songs For Tomorrow 4.50 Emeralds
  • Dre Murray - 34 4.75 Emeralds
  • Mutemath - Vitals 4.75 Emeralds
  • Joshua Price - Elevate 4.50 Emeralds
  • Puntin - Gold 4.50 Emeralds
  • Seeker and Servant - You Alone Forever 4.75 Emeralds
  • Vineyard UK - Hear The Sound 4.75 Emeralds
  • Wilkes - Shells EP 4.75 Emeralds
That does it for this month. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Shemita Songs: The 2015 Platinum Vinyl Awards 4th Qtr - Alternative

As we begin our single genre postings, tied for 6 entries, which is the lowest of this quarter, is Alternative (or Alternative Rock, if you prefer). It was tied with Live Recorded Album, which, though not an official genre, I have included it in the mix for the first time, and it is among the genre based albums in the finals, and not in the General Field. Let's get to it.

Alternative Rock

Anberlin gets to double dip with a listing here and in Live Recorded Album. Gungor just continues to excel at everything and Kevin Max is as steady and excellent as ever. Next up is Rap and Hip Hop. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Night Beat Rewind: August 2015

Eleven down, one to go. Once September is done we can put the cover on the #PlatVnyl6 pool and open the #PlatVnyl7 pool for entries. 7 Years. God Is Good. There was one song released in August, and that was the Title Track for Stryper's upcoming album Fallen. It wasn't as good as Yahweh, but you would be very rarely have two perfect songs, even on a perfect album. I give it 4.75 Emeralds.

We begin our album coverage with those releases which, while pretty good (I haven't found a real stinker in years), just aren't platinum.

Missing The Mark

  • Between The Trees & Ryan Kirkland - Wanderer 3.75 Emeralds
  • Rend Collective Experiment - As Family We Go 3.75 Emeralds
  • Jim Sonefeld - Love EP 3.50 Emeralds
  • United Pursuit Band - Simple Gospel 3.50 Emeralds
  • Various Artists - Top 25 Hymns: The Old Rugged Cross 3.75 Emeralds
  • Various Artists - War Room: Music From The Original Motion Picture 3.75 Emeralds
  • Aaron Watkins - Chasing After You 3.75 Emeralds
I was very disappointed by Rend Collective, they sounded so ordinary. While I don't know much about United Pursuit, I do know that Michael Ketterer teamed up with Har Megiddo, so I had my expectations. The next group not only met my expectations, they smashed through them.

Pure Platinum Perfection

  • JJ Heller - Sound of a Living Heart 5 Emeralds
  • Toby Mac - This Is Not A Test 5 Emeralds
  • P.O.D. - The Awakening 5 Emeralds
  • Pillar - One Love Revolution 5 Emeralds
  • Sidewalk Prophets - Something Different 5 Emeralds
All I can say to this quintet is WOW. JJ Heller burst out of her folk mold to be a certified Pop Star. Pillar reformed its original lineup and returned to the rap-core sound that I loved on Fireproof. P.O.D. likewise reached heights like a Satellite, and even Toby Mac has put out his best album in a while. I know, I didn't dote on the Sidewalk Prophets, but they were awesome as well. Now on to the ones in the middle

Semi-Precious Metal

  • Brinson - Until We Meet Again 4.75 Emeralds
  • Tasha Cobbs - One Place (Live) 4.50 Emeralds
  • Disciple - The Best of 2005-2013 4.75 Emeralds
  • Abigail Duhon - More Than Gold 4.50 Emeralds
  • For A Season - I Will Wait 4.75 Emeralds
  • Ghost Ship - Costly 4.50 Emeralds
  • Geoffrey Golden - Kingdom Live 4.75 Emeralds
  • Travis Greene - Intentional EP 4.50 Emeralds
  • Gungor - One Wild Life: Soul 4.75 Emeralds
  • Cheri Keaggy - No Longer My Own 4.75 Emeralds
  • Bridgett Kern - No One Greater 4.75 Emeralds
  • Nichole Nordeman - The Unmaking EP 4.75 Emeralds
  • Natasha Owens - No One But You 4.75 Emeralds
  • Jeremy Rosado - Heartbeat 4.50 Emeralds
  • 7eventh Time Down - #GODISONTHEMOVE 4.75 Emeralds
  • Aaron Shust - Doxology 4.75 Emeralds
  • Thi'sl - Heavy Is The Head 4.25 Emeralds
  • Tony Tillman - Camden 4.50 Emeralds
  • Tony Tillman - Camden (Instrmentals) 4.50 Emeralds
  • John Waller - Crazy Faith 4.50 Emeralds
  • WARR Acres - Future 4.75 Emeralds
I am going to forgo links once again to get this out. I think I shall go back and do the old ones. If I don't they shall never get done. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Bad Moon Rising: The 2014 Platinum Vinyl Awards 4th Qtr - Alternative

I've decided to go with Chronological Order here, so of the two I am starting with Alternative. Each genre got 15 nominees to the pool, that's two finals worth IN ONE QUARTER ALONE. Pardon the shouting but that's how big this is. So without further ado:

Alternative

  • Anberlin - Lowborn
  • Bellarive - Before There Was
  • Climbing Blind - Burn
  • Colony House - When I Was Younger
  • Esterlyn - Love
  • For King and Country - Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong
  • Golden Youth - The Kingdom
  • Gungor - I Am Mountain (Deluxe)
  • Gungor - I Am Mountain (Bonus Material)
  • House of Heroes - Smoke EP
  • Jars of Clay - 20
  • John Mark McMillan - The Borderland Sessions
  • Needtobreathe - 60/50 Oceanway: The Live Room Sessions
  • Switchfoot - The Edge of the Earth: Unreleased Songs from the film Fading West
  • Tenth Avenue North - Islands
Anberlin is going out on top of their game, and that's good for all of us. And Gungor is going to start something with their bonus material release. It makes all of us who buy the original album happy when we can get a deluxe edition without the repeats. Gotta have Gospel to finish. Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

MVM Special Edition: #PlatVnyl4 - Alternative Video of The Year

The Video Awards have begun. To see the results for our first award, click on the link.

Our second award is Alternative Video of The Year. This category had some  top notch talent and one newcomer that is going to rock the charts very soon. Our nominees were: Believer by Audio Adrenaline; Bombs Away by +Jonathan Thulin ; I Am Mountain by +Gungor Band ; K.I.D.S. by +Farah Loux ; and Unstable by +Anberlin . You can see the announcement post and the nominated videos at the link.

This award took a little extra time to pick, due to the fact that Anberlin decided to make Lowborn its swan song. Multiple watching of the nominated videos were needed to clear any biased emotions, but in the end the decision was unanimous. The winner of the #PlatVnyl4 Alternative Video of The Year was Unstable.
Our next category is Pop Video of The Year. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Night Beat Rewind: July 2014

We have come into the Dog Days of Summer. Though of course this is, with a few days excepted, a year without a Summer. Not that I'm complaining.

Also, while we are only five days into August, I have completed this edition of Rewind for July. Pretty Good. We shall see how long it takes to type. Perhaps I will wait on links.

As is the recent pattern, we begin with a few Single releases, or what I tongue in cheek refer to as

The Singles Scene

  • Lauren Daigle - How Can It Be 4.50 Emeralds
  • Disciple - Radical 5 Emeralds
  • Thousand Foot Krutch - Born This Way 4.75 Emeralds
While I love Trevor and TFK, Disciple just blew me away, so I had to give them the perfect score. Not so perfect are the first group of albums, they are they which are

Missing The Mark

  • '68 - In Humor and Sadness 3.75 Emeralds
  • Bizzle - Well Wishes 3.75 Emeralds
  • Carman - Beginnings 3.75 Emeralds
  • B. Cooper - While The City Sleeps 3.75 Emeralds
  • Hillary Jane - Stix and Stones 3.75 Emeralds
  • Hillsong Worship - No Other Name 3.75 Emeralds
  • JT - Moment of Silence 3.75 Emeralds
Now all of these just missed the opening bar of 4 Emeralds to get into the Platinum Vinyl Pool. No problem with the next group missing out. These are all

Pure Platinum

  • Anberlin - Lowborn 5 Emeralds
  • For The Fatherless - For The Fatherless 5 Emeralds
  • Gungor - I Am Mountain (Deluxe Edition) 5 Emeralds
  • Moriah Peters - Brave 5 Emeralds
It is sad to see Anberlin go, but what a way to go. Gungor has impressed those of us at night Beat HQ since they went New Age/Alternative, and For The Fatherless had a very strong debut. Next up are those releases which, while not Pure Platinum still made the pool. These are the

Semi-Precious Metal

Before we begin with the regular list, Capitol Christian Music Group (Sparrow, Forefront) has joined its Parent in releasing the 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection. This month's releases were Carman, Emery, Norma Jean and Starfield. Now with the exception of Carman, only Norma Jean (founded 1997) qualifies. The other two are 21st Century Masters. Nitpicking? Maybe? but that is my job. In order listed, my ratings were 4.25, 4.75, 4.50, and 4.75 Emeralds. Now to the rest of the list.
  • About a Mile - About A Mile 4.75 Emeralds
  • Aaron Bagwell - The Sound of Jesus 4.50 Emeralds
  • Bellarive - Before There Was 4.50 Emeralds
  • Cadence - Home 4.75 Emeralds
  • Colony House - When I Was Younger 4.75 Emeralds
  • Covenant Worship - Kingdom 4.50 Emeralds
  • Mr. Del - Hope Dealer 2 4.50 Emeralds
  • Bethany Devine - Daily Confessions 4.75 Emeralds
  • David Dunn - Crystal Clear 4.50 Emeralds
  • Forevermore - Telos 4.75 Emeralds
  • J-Giles Son - Employed by The King 4.75 Emeralds
  • Golden Youth - The Kingdom 4.75 Emeralds
  • Guardian - Almost Home 4.75 Emeralds
  • Gungor - I Am Mountain (Bonus Material) 4.75 Emeralds
  • Islander - Violence and Destruction 4.50 Emeralds
  • Canton Jones - God City USA 4.75 Emeralds
  • The Lasting Hope - Sunsets and Second Chances 4.50 Emeralds
  • MxPx - MxPx Acoustic Collection 4.75 Emeralds
  • Jonas Park and David Bollman - Forward 4.50 Emeralds
  • Phanatik - The Art of Battle Rap: Puns and Punchlines, Vol. 1 4.75 Emeralds
  • Red Coalescence - Killers 4.50 Emeralds
  • Kierra Sheard - Graceland 4.75 Emeralds
  • Summit FutureNow - The Now and the Not Yet 4.75 Emeralds
  • Various Artists - Pass The Mic: The Rise of Christian Hip Hop 4.50 Emeralds
  • War of Ages - Supreme Chaos 4.75 Emeralds
  • Ian Yates - DNA 4.75 Emeralds
That concludes July. Two more months left in this eligibility year. I have decided to forgo links at the moment. They will be added little by little. Keep checking back for updates. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Music Video Monday: It's What We Crave

Welcome back to our regularly scheduled Music Video Monday. We're loaded for bear here at MVM so let's get right to it. We're going to go with Audio Adrenaline once again to kick things off. This is Kings and Queens.

Staying with the royalty things, sometimes there is no better motivation for things than doing them For King and Country. This is Hope is What We Crave.

Simon and Garfunkel may have wanted to be an Island, but Michael Gungor said, who needs a stinking Island. I Am Mountain.

Finally, we conclude with Ghost Ship, to spread a little Halloween Joy, and, Mediator.

That concludes this regularly scheduled Music Video Monday. This weeks weekend edition will contain videos from Paramore, The Almost and others. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Heat Advisory: The 2013 Fourth Quarter - Alternative

Alternative Rock is next. This genre is tied with Pop this quarter for second place with 11 entries. Modern Worship took the title with 16.

There was one perfect album in the mix this time around. Cloverton was just about the definition of what Alternative should be. All that was lacking was a photo and a dictionary. Coincidentally, of course, they are first on the list.

Alternative Music

  • Cloverton - Patterns
  • Crave - Crave
  • The Digital Age - Evening Morning
  • Falling Up - Hours
  • Falling Up - Midnight on Earthship
  • Gungor - I am Mountain
  • Jars of Clay - Inland
  • Nations - Nations
  • Seabird - Troubled Days
  • Search The City - Flight
  • Derek Webb - I was wrong, I'm Sorry, and I Love You.
I loved Gungor this time. Not perfect, mind you, but really loved. I say that because a lot of reviews criticize it for being too "new age" and "Not a Worship Album". Of course, for someone who loves New Age Music (yoo-hoo Mannheim Steamroller), I said, "you say it like it's a bad thing."

A few more to go. To all the entrants of the Great WENC Night Beat 3rd Birthday Giveaway, thank you. If you were a winner, your prize was shipped. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Falling Notes: The 2013 First Quarter - Alternative

The Alternative Rock Category is always one of the biggest in the Platinum Vinyl Awards. Alternative and Rock almost could be one category, but thank God we usually separate them, because it would make narrowing down the field without a major fued impossible.

There were ten entrants into the Alternative Pool this First Quarter of 2013. Because of that we go to our familiar list format, and will not go into detail on each one.
  • After Edmund - Strange Education
  • Anberlin - Vital
  • Dawn - A Different Kind of Love Song
  • East Coast Christian Center - This is Love
  • Farah Loux - Flaws
  • Further Seems Forever - Penny Black
  • Gungor - A Creation Liturgy
  • Hyland - Finding Our Way
  • Lifehouse - Almeria
  • Matt & Toby - Matt & Toby
  • Smalltown Poets - Under the New Sun
  • Sons - Keep Quieter
  • Jonathan Thulin - The White Room
It's way to soon to make predictions on any chances, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Anberlin among the finalists (really big limb there). Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

The Platinum Collection: The Top Six

In our last post we announced the bottom half of The Platinum Dozen, the twelve best albums of the year 2012, as determined by us here at The Night Beat. We Continue now with the Top 6.

6. Blessed By A Broken Heart, Feel The Power (January 24, 2012)

I LOVE 80's Music. Probably since that was my formative decade. CCM Came into the rock era in the 80's and so did Heavy Metal, with bands such as Bloodgood and Stryper. Since then the metal world has gone screamo/thrash with those growls that always make me think "that's got to hurt". This band from Montreal has it all. Stryper like harmonies, awesome guitar shreds, and great songs. As they say on their album, "Bang Your Head, Shut Up and Rock." What a way to kick off the new year, as this was the first Perfect album of the year, coming out on January 24. Read my original post at the link. They can even do a good Metal Love song in Forever.

5. Shiny Toy Guns, III (October 22, 2012)

From Metal to Techno. Before they were in the mainstream, the duo of Chad Petree and Jeremy Dawson were well known among the Christian Fringe as Cloud 2 Ground, and though the music may have less of an obvious Christian tint, Shiny Toy Guns still has enough of C2G to please. I gave the album a Perfect 5 in my Original Post. Of course with their music videos, what is it with Carah Faye having to run everywhere. Somebody get this gorgeous blond a sports car. Another one which should clean up at next years Platinum Vinyl Awards. There is nowhere to hide from Shiny Toy Guns.

4. Project 86, Wait for the Siren (August 21, 2012)

The Hard Rockers from San Diego (no, not P.O.D.), these are the other ones strike Platinum once again. Strings, Screams, arrangements. From the opening notes of Fall Goliath Fall with its Celtic intro to the title cut which ends it, this is a Hard Rock album worth every penny. Defector is about the only place to take a breather. The title cut, placed at the end with Celtic Pipes worthy of Iona, pure genius. Definitely a Siren Song worth listening to.

3. Sarah Macintosh, Current (March 6, 2012)

The former lead singer of Chasing Furies returns with her first album in four long years and does not disappoint. Her vocals are unique in the music world, and they are expertly used in this album. About the time the album was released a series of Music Videos taken in the Recording Studio were released on Youtube. The raw energy of these recordings is breathtaking. Personally, the best of these is Damaged.

T1. Lara Landon, Overcome (May 1, 2012) and Gungor, A Creation Liturgy (October 9, 2012)

Falling for an artist was never easier. Lara is without argument the best singer in Christian Music today, and probably the only Torch Singer in the industry. Yes, I'm a guy, but there is no way to describe her voice except seductive. And her Arabic heritage allows her to pull off the middle eastern Look East without a hitch. She can even do country in Leah, and I love it. That says a lot. Get caught in the River.

There was never a doubt about number one from the moment this album was released until the PVA Year ended, and Gungor came out with their live album for the Ghosts upon the earth tour. I didn't like the studio album much, felt it lacked pop, so I was skeptical about the live album, which is usually less energetic for some reason. Not so here. If they could have captured this magic in the studio, but they didn't.

That's it folks, the Top 12 Albums for the Calendar Year 2012. I will soon come out with my PVA Top list, which goes from October 1, 2011 - September 30, 2012, and a few others will be on this list. Until then, A Merry Christmas to all from all of us here at The Night Beat.

Night Beat Rewind: October 2012

Welcome to the regularly scheduled edition of Night Beat Rewind. We kind of got a little sidetracked this month because of an over abundance of Christmas Music. That, combined with a whopping 47 entries of the non seasonal variety, makes for quite a long post. I am sure that I  will be testing you readers, but bear with me. Actually, most of them will be at the end, so stay with me.

As always, we begin with those releases which I say are:

Missing The Mark

Now since I get new readers every day, I will remind you that these releases aren't bad. Most are Okay as I would put it. It's just that I demand WOW to make the Platinum Vinyl Awards and these don't do it for me.

Perfect Platinum

I decided to put the ABR Christmas album here as well due to its Platinum Status, but it will be the only crossover between the lists. Of the Four, Gungor Really surprised, seeing that I am usually underwhelmed by the studio albums, but this live one, WOW.

Semi-Precious Metal

That concludes the October 2012 Wrap. The 4th Annual Platinum Vinyl Awards eligibility year is now underway. Keep it tuned here for all of the exclusive coverage. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.
